Overview

Old Town Malaysian Cafe 旧街场美食坊, located on Great North Road in New Lynn, Auckland, is a welcoming haven for lovers of authentic Malaysian cuisine. This modest yet charming restaurant captures the essence of traditional Malaysian street food, offering a menu brimming with soulful dishes that reflect rich culinary heritage.

The highlight here is undoubtedly the variety of noodle dishes. Classics like Char Kway Teow and BBQ Pork Wanton Noodles stand out for their balanced flavors and expert execution. The Char Kway Teow is cooked with the perfect wok hei, delivering a smoky, slightly charred depth that sits beautifully with tender seafood and succulent pork. Meanwhile, the Wanton Mee impresses with its springy noodles, a savory sauce that is both subtle and savory, and tender wontons that provide the right bite. The nostalgic presentation on traditional red plastic plates adds an intimate, homey touch, evoking memories of bustling Malaysian hawker centers.

For those seeking hearty, comforting options, dishes like Beef Rendang and Curry Laksa Fish Head showcase complex layers of spices and rich, aromatic broths. The Curry Laksa Fish Head, in particular, is a standout, blending creamy coconut milk with a fragrant curry base that perfectly complements the fresh fish. Wat Tan Hor, featuring flat egg noodles in a silky egg gravy, offers a comforting texture and taste that’s simple yet masterfully done.

Old Town’s side offerings and specialties such as Steamed Sticky Rice with Chicken highlight the authentic approach to Malaysian flavors and textures, adding depth to the meal experience. While the Hainanese Chicken Whole serves as a sizeable and traditional option for groups, it is best picked with care as opinions have varied.

The atmosphere is cozy and unpretentious, making it ideal for both casual diners craving familiar tastes and those new to Malaysian food eager to explore genuine flavors in an inviting setting. The service reflects the warmth and attentiveness one expects from a family-run eatery, enhancing the overall dining experience.

Customer feedback generally praises the restaurant for its faithful homage to Malaysian street fare, with many appreciating the nostalgic quality and well-portioned meals. While some dishes like the chicken rice have received mixed reviews, the noodle selections consistently earn high marks for texture and flavor balance.

In summary, Old Town Malaysian Cafe 旧街场美食坊 is a destination worth visiting for anyone seeking authentic Malaysian cuisine in Auckland. Its dedication to traditional recipes and a straightforward presentation style creates an honest, satisfying dining experience that invites repeat visits.

First Time at Old Town Malaysia Café Tried the Wan Ton Mee, Wat Tan Hor, and Fried Carrot Cake. The food was delicious, with flavors that reminded me of classic Singaporean street food—simple, comforting, and full of nostalgia. Portions are just right for one person. A great spot if you’re craving traditional tastes in a cozy setting.

Yummy place for wanton mee. I always go for wanton mee or wan tan hor. Good texture for noodles and good sauce. But stay away from chicken rice , probably the worst I had in my life. Rice was so sticky and mush, chicken was tough. Sauce for chicken was pretty unusual as well.

Tried the curry chee cheong fun and also the dried pan mee. Dried pan mee was not bad but the chee cheong fun we didn't like at all. Way too saucy and the curry was way too sweet and strong flavour which cause flavour fatigue. Dropped one star due to that. Had the wonton noodle with char siu. The wonton soup was good. But the star of the show is the noodles which was cooked perfectly in texture. The sauce that was used has the perfect balance of savoury and gentle sweetness. Only thing I think can be improved was the char siu. It needs to have more char and caramelisation. Otherwise a super yummy meal, the sauce and the pickled green chili was good too. Reasonably priced, so I can see why lots of people come here.

We were after some traditional Malaysian food for lunch and heard lots about this place so thought of trying it. Would definitely go back as we had no complaints about the food although the char kway teow portion was a little light. The only thing that we missed out on was the carrot cake as they weren’t available that day and was the main dish we wanted to try. The place is really simple and kind of nostalgic in a way back in Malaysia so don’t expect a fancy atmosphere. Toilets are available at the back and a few street parking around.
